Effects of Nutrition and Lifestyle on the Equine Hoof

Nutrition

So what to look for when we are looking into feeds.

It can be so confusing for people to know what to look for when there are so many on the shelf to look at.  For most of the time the feeds are so high in sugar and crammed with other things that it does nothing for the horse at all, so why do I say high in sugar, sugar is very bad for horses especially for the laminitic horse.  Why, because our horses are like humans, in a way they are diabetics so more sugar the bigger the risk.  There is a fantastic website to look at for you wanting to know a lot more about diet:  www.safergrass.org and also check out www.simplesystemhorsefeeds.co.uk

Paddock Paradise

Paddock Paradise, A Guide to Natural Horse Boarding by Jamie JacksonThe life style of a horse is massive to the outcome in its health, the way it moves in it gaits and the mind of the horse too, not to mention the feet in all of this. This is why the paddock paradise is such a good idea for the horse, they can move about whenever they want. We have our paddock paradise done up, we have a 3 acre field and we have put a track around the edge of the field and put hay out in set points around the track making them move, not standing like a cow does, they need to move like they would do in the wild. In one corner of the field we have the drinking water for them and in the other side of the field we have a shelter for them to go into when they need to. It keeps them going looking all the time for food and water and on the plus side helps to keep the feet in better condition and keeps them fit. If you are wanting to know more look on the web-site www.paddockparadise.com

There is also a book you can follow.  You can see how Jamie Jackson followed the wild mustang for days on end to see how they move and live etcetera.  Highly recommended read.
